Dual Enrollment Academic & Career Pathways

CLICK for a list of Frequently Asked Questions/FAQs about GPTC's Dual Enrollment program.

  • What is Dual Enrollment?
    • Dual Enrollment (DE) is an opportunity for Georgia High School Students in 10th-12th grade to take college classes in academic and career-focused programs that will count towards both high school and college graduation. Students in 11th and 12th grade are eligible to take core academic classes.  Students in 10th grade are eligible to take CTAE classes only.
  • Is Dual Enrollment free?
    • Eligible students taking approved courses receive 30 credits of Dual Enrollment funding through the Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC) that cover the cost of tuition and books. However, some classes may have additional fees or materials that are not paid for by GSFC.
    • After 30 credits, eligible students may be able to use HOPE Grant funds towards their courses.
    • For specific information regarding student eligibility and funding requirements, please visit GA Futures.
  • How do I apply to Dual Enrollment?
    • Students must submit an online application for admissions, new student permission forms, placement test scores, and complete a GA Futures funding application.  For specific instructions on the application process, please review the Dual Enrollment Application.
  • What classes can I take through Dual Enrollment?
    • Students can take core academic courses and CTE courses that align with a pathway.  For a complete list of eligible classes, please view the DE Course Directory.  Please be advised that classes may not be offered every semester or on every campus.  Classes can be taken on the GPTC campus, through GPTC online, and at some participating high schools.
  • Who can I contact to find out more information about Dual Enrollment?
  • Is this “real” college?
    • Yes, any course taken during Dual Enrollment is part of both your permanent high school and college records, even if you enroll with another college after high school graduation.
  • Is the GPTC calendar the same as my high school?
    • GPTC has a calendar that may be different from your high school.  Semester breaks, holidays, and teacher in-service days may be different.  Even if your high school is closed, you may still have a GPTC class meeting.  Please make sure you keep track of the GPTC Academic Calendar and any dates and deadlines posted by your instructors in the class syllabus.
  • Is the GPTC schedule the same as my high school?
    • GPTC has a Class Schedule that may be different from your high school.  Classes may be fully online, meet once a week, or meet multiple times.  When looking at classes, make sure you are viewing the meeting times.  If you are taking a class on campus, make sure you are factoring in transportation so that you can get to class on time.
  • Who has access to my college records (FERPA)?
    • Student Information Release Authorization (FERPA)
    • All students are protected by FERPA (Family Education Rights and Privacy Act), regardless of the age of the student. Once a student begins classes, GPTC is only able to speak with the student regarding admissions, schedules, grades, etc. unless there is a FERPA release form on file with the college.
    • Even with a FERPA release form on file, only the student can make changes to their account. This includes adding, dropping, or withdrawing from courses, updating student information, or changing majors, or requesting transcripts. The student must be the one to request any changes are made to the student account, whether it be through email or in person.
    • GPTC will report grades and student information back to the high school counselor or designee.
  • I have an IEP or other accommodations with my high school. How do I get that information to GPTC?
    • At the college level, students must self-identify in order to receive accommodations. High school accommodations do not automatically transfer to the college.
    • For information about establishing accommodations, please contact the Office of Disability Services.
    • Please be advised that accommodations begin when forms are completed and submitted, along with documentation. Accommodations are not retroactive.
  • How do I register for a class?
    • To register for classes, students must have completed a GA Futures funding application, have the permission of the high school counselor, and submit the schedule request to dualenrollment@gptc.edu.
    • Students do not register or drop classes themselves. Students who make a schedule change without permission of the high school counselor or DE coordinator may not be eligible for Dual Enrollment funding.
    • Schedule adjustments through the drop/add period of the semester.
  • What happens if I fail or withdraw from a class?
    • All class attempts will appear on the student high school and college transcript.
    • The class will count towards the 30 credits of Dual Enrollment funding.
    • Students are not able to repeat classes that they have failed or withdrawn from and receive Dual Enrollment funding.
    • Failures and withdrawals may impact future student eligibility.
  • What is Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)?
    • Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
    • Students must meet SAP eligibility to participate in dual enrollment. This includes maintaining a 2.0 cumulative GPA, and completing at least 2/3 of the classes for which the student registered.
    • Failure to meet these requirements for two semesters will result in academic suspension.

Selective Service Requirements for Dual Enrollment

Effective Summer term, fiscal year 2023, the Georgia Student Finance Commission added a new requirement. All males, US Citizens and immigrants, are required to register with the United States Selective Service System, in accordance with O.C.G.A. § 20-3-519.1(b). This is for all males ages 18 through 25.

Students must be registered with the Selective Service System before dual enrollment funds are awarded. Eligible males may register 30 days prior, to their 18th birthday, but are not required to register until they are 18. This includes all males who will turn 18 during an enrollment term.

Failure to register for the Selective Service System will result in the student and/or family being responsible for paying the cost of tuition and books.
