Administrators from Georgia Piedmont Technical College’s (GPTC) Adult Education program have selected LaTrevya Mitchell as the 2018 EAGLE award recipient. Now in its 25th year, EAGLE (Exceptional Adult Georgian in Literacy Education) is the first statewide program in the nation that recognizes excellence among students enrolled in adult education programs.
“I applaud LaTrevya Mitchell for deciding to enroll in the Adult Education program here at Georgia Piedmont,” said Dr. Jabari Simama, president of Georgia Piedmont Technical College. “Her courage is inspiring, and her determination to become an early childhood educator is impressive. I know she will be an outstanding delegate at the statewide competition,” Dr. Simama concluded.
The EAGLE program creates greater awareness of educational opportunities that are available throughout local communities and fosters involvement in lifelong learning. Ms. Penny Womack-Jackson, an Adult Education program coordinator at Georgia Piedmont, nominated Mitchell for the EAGLE competition.
“Latrevya is dedicated to succeeding as a mother and as a student,” Womack-Jackson said. “Her determination to complete her education will most likely help her achieve a different socio-economic status. Despite life’s issues, Latrevya finishes at the top of her class,” she continued.
“In 2015, I enrolled in the Adult Ed program to get my GED®, but little did I know that I would go on to pursue the diploma in Early Childhood Care and Education,” Mitchell said. “After I graduate, I would like to teach young children in the infancy-through-kindergarten-age range. I love their energy,” she said. “I believe ‘Ready When You Are’ should be the motto of Adult Ed programs offered through Georgia’s technical colleges. Participating in the Adult Ed program is not easy; going to class and completing the assignments have to be a priority. For those individuals who stick with it, however, the rewards are great,” Mitchell explained.
Mitchell will represent Georgia Piedmont at the Technical College System of Georgia’s EAGLE Leadership Institute on March 14, 2018. The EAGLE Leadership Institute, hosted by the Renaissance Atlanta Waverly Hotel in Atlanta, recognizes students who have demonstrated superior achievement in adult education programs offered throughout the state’s 22 technical colleges.
